PHV Prep UK Is Now on Android — Both Stores, One Mission

PHV Prep UK is now live on both the App Store and Google Play. It’s an exam preparation app for the Wolverhampton Private Hire Vehicle licensing test — the knowledge test UK drivers sit to get their taxi badge — and it’s built around a single idea: practise until the key questions are automatic.

What’s in the app

• 300+ exam-style questions across the seven official categories.
• Timed mock exams — 28 questions, 45 minutes, under real exam conditions.
• The 8 key questions rule, marked the way the real test marks it: get even one key question wrong and you fail the whole paper, no matter how good your overall score is.
• An AI Tutor — ask anything about the exam and get an instant answer in plain English.
• Progress tracking by category, so you can see where you’re weak and drill exactly that.

Why both platforms matter

96% of Wolverhampton-licensed PHV drivers live outside Wolverhampton. Because of cross-border licensing, this was never a local audience — it’s a national one.

A large share of those drivers use Android. Staying iOS-only meant missing many of the people the app was built for.

It’s the same app on both platforms: same content, same features, no second-class version.

Built solo

I’m a solo developer and a Cyber Security student at the University of Worcester. PHV Prep UK is built with Flutter and Firebase, and the AI Tutor runs on Anthropic’s Claude API, called server-side through a Firebase Cloud Function so the key never ships inside the app.

Getting onto two app stores wasn’t smooth. Google rejected the Android build twice before approval — including a Misleading Claims policy violation, which required listing all seven official source documents with verified URLs and adding a visible non-affiliation disclaimer.
